RESIST: Haitian Revolution NV

The Resist Collection is a call to action for us to remember what we fought for in the past. It’s a call for us to realize that we still have much fighting to do. And it’s a call to examine our successes and failures so that we can continue to move forward the way our ancestors intended us to.

This piece pays homage to The Haitian Revolution, led by formerly enslaved general, Toussaint L’overture. The Haitian Revolution has often been described as the largest and most successful slave rebellion in the Western Hemisphere. Slaves initiated the rebellion in 1791 and by 1803 they had succeeded in ending not just slavery but French control over the colony.
